Tour Details

The Upper Mustang Trek offers an opportunity to trek in a remote and culturally rich part of the Mustang Region, which is a restricted area in Nepal. The region has managed to preserve its unique heritage and traditions over the centuries. The region is surrounded by the Himalayan giants, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, and is said to be a hidden Buddhist kingdom due to its spiritual roots. The government has restricted this region to preserve its culture, monasteries, cave homes, and villages, making it one of the most authentic cultural trekking experiences in Nepal.

Until 1992, Upper Mustang was a restricted demilitarized zone, which helped to preserve the culture and environment of this region. Even today, the people in this region have managed to preserve their age-old traditions, and people speak in traditional Tibetan languages. The word “Mustang” is said to have originated from the word “Tibetan,” which means “Plain of Aspiration.” Since this region has been allowed to trek by foreigners, this region has become popular among trekkers, but it still feels remote and exclusive due to the permit policy.

This trek is a rare opportunity to explore the spectacular desert landscapes of the Himalayas, where colorful rock formations, deep canyons, and valleys create a striking contrast with the snow-capped peaks in the background. During the trek, trekkers pass through ancient walled cities like Lo Manthang, centuries-old monasteries, prayer flags, and chortens, which reflect the Buddhist influence in this region. Therefore, the Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most unique treks in the Himalayas.

Highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek:

  • Untouched natural beauty in the rugged mountain landscape.
  • Breathtaking views of the Himalayas.
  • Exploration of the distinctive terrain of Upper Mustang.
  • Enjoying authentic Thakali cuisine.
  • Immersing yourself in the rich traditions of Sherpa and Gurung cultures.

You will be welcomed by an Asian Heritage Travel representative with a nameplate upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, and you will then be taken to your hotel located within the busy tourist district known as Thamel in Kathmandu. You will see some of the highlights of the city while traveling to the hotel, including Pashupatinath Temple, Narayanhiti Royal Palace Museum, and the peaceful Garden of Dreams. Once you arrive at your hotel, a representative will meet you to discuss your itinerary and answer any questions you might have about it. After you check into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to explore the busy streets, cafés, and shops of Thamel or relax at your hotel.

Includes: Private transport and an overnight accommodation at Yatri Suites and Spa or a similar hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Start your sightseeing tour by meeting your guide and climbing into your private vehicle. Your first stop will be Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you will walk among centuries-old royal palaces, intricate carvings on countless temples, and traditional courtyard-style buildings indicative of the venerable history of ancient Kathmandu.

Your next destination on your journey is Swayambhunath, commonly referred to as the Monkey Temple. Swayambhunath is a sacred stupa located atop a hill that contains both Buddhist and Hindu cultural influences, and provides fabulous views of the Kathmandu Valley and the distant peaks of the Himalayas.

The next stop on your tour is Pashupatinath Temple, one of the premier Hindu pilgrimage destinations in Southeast Asia. Pashupatinath Temple is built on the banks of the Bagmati River, where you will get a glimpse of the open-air cremation ceremonies and experience the spiritual practices surrounding the temple complex.

The last stop of the day is the incredible Boudhanath Stupa (another UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is one of the largest stupas in the world. Kagbeni is a medieval-style village located at the confluence of two rivers. It is a windswept village that lies along the ancient Trans-Himalayan salt trade route that once connected Nepal to Tibet via the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. This is a historic and culturally significant region of Nepal that lies within the Mustang District. It is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the region that still has many stories and mysteries to be unraveled.

The trek takes us along sandy tracks, often in the open and subject to strong winds, after which the route gradually ascends a hill. During this trek, we pass through the village of Tangbe, where you may want to visit the village, which has narrow streets, white-washed houses, and cultivated fields of barley, buckwheat, and apple groves.

Moving on, we pass through another village, cross a river, and then ascend to a ridge, after which the trek takes us to the village of Chele, where our day’s trek comes to an end.

During the trek, we will get a chance to see the breathtaking views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawakang, and Damodar Danda, as well as the interesting Ramchung Cave.

The trek is quite challenging at times, especially when the strong winds are blowing across the trekking route. Travel Insurance

Nepal has a lot to offer with its incredible natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality. Travelling can also come with risks, which is why anyone visiting Nepal needs to consider purchasing travel insurance, particularly those involved in adventure activities or trekking, as well as those who will be travelling to remote areas of Nepal. A well-rounded insurance policy can provide peace of mind through protection against the following:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Trip cancellations/delays
  • Lost or damaged baggage
  • Altitude sickness from high elevations
  • Emergency rescue/evacuation by helicopter

Many trekking routes in Nepal are over 3000 meters (9842 ft); therefore, your policy should specifically state that high altitude travel is part of your Insurance plan, as well as the option to be evacuated in the event of an emergency. Choosing the right policy will help you receive the best possible care in your time of need.
