The Shivapuri National Park hiking comprises two of Nepal’s most interesting Buddhist and Hindu religious sites on the fringe of the Kathmandu Valley, with a hike of 5 to 6 hours. You start your journey at Budhanilkantha, which also happens to be the starting point of your hike; visit the holy site of the sleeping Hindu deity Vishnu. From there, hike uphill through the tranquil forests of Shivapuri National Park to Nagi Gompa, a beautiful Buddhist monastery atop a magnificent hill, offering panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley.
Highlights of the Shivapuri National Park Hiking:
Our vehicle will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning after your breakfast and transfer you to Budhanilkantha Temple. Pay homage to the sleeping Lord Vishnu, seen lying from the outer edge of the temple pond at Budhanilkantha-a clever visual effect makes the deity appear to float above the water’s surface-while your guide explains the background and significance of this unique Hindu figure.
Start hiking up towards the Shivapuri National Park army post to sign in, then start your approximately 2.5-hour stroll through the lush forest upwards to the Buddhist monastery called Nagi Gompa. On the way, enjoy the beautiful scenery, great views of the Himalayan ranges, and panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley. Arrive at Nagi Gompa and rest for some time, visiting the monastery. It’s also known as a bird-watching spot, so keep your eyes peeled for the local bird life.
After the visit, start your way down to Sundarijal by having a great time viewing numerous waterfalls on the way. Upon arrival in Sundarijal, take some time to wander around the local market. At last, drive back to Kathmandu using the vehicle that gets you into a day full of nature, culture, and tremendous views.
