Your experience and the start of your Bhutan Highlights Tour in this magical kingdom begin with a spectacular flight over the Himalayas into the Paro Valley, which is certainly one of the most spectacular experiences in life. The dzong was renovated in 1965 by the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Tashichho dzong is the administrative and religious heart of Bhutan and home to the throne room of His Majesty the King, the ministries of the government, the largest monastery in the country, and the headquarters of His Holiness the Je Khenpo and the monk body. The National Assembly Hall is in a newer building across the river, which is the Parliament House. In the evening, have free time to explore the town of Thimphu.

Includes: Airfare, Dinner, Private transport, an English-speaking guide, and an overnight accommodation at Tashi Yoedling Hotel or a Similar Hotel in Thimpu.

In the afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong, constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. For several years, until the time of the Second King, it was the seat of the Government. The dzong is called Druk Pungtang Dechen Phodrang, which means “The Palace of Great Happiness.”

Punakha is the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). The First National Assembly was held here in 1952, organized by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. You will also visit the Punakha Suspension Bridge, which is one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan.

Later, take a short and easy trek to Chhimi Lhakhang, also known as the “Temple of Fertility,” which was established by Lama Drukpa Kunley, also referred to as the “Divine Madman.” The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 4Punakha to Bumthang (Driving Distance: 187km. Driving Duration: 7-8 hrs. Altitude of Bumthang: 2550m )

After an early breakfast, proceed to Trongsa, stopping en route at Pela Pass (3,350 m) and Chendji Chorten/Stupa.

Visit Trongsa Dzong, which dates back to 1648, and was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Both the first and second kings of Bhutan ruled the country from this historic fortress. It was a tradition that all four kings were invested as Trongsa Penlop (“Governor”) before ascending to the throne. The dzong is a huge multi-level structure, which was built along the contours of the ridge on which it stands.

Because of its extremely strategic position as the only connecting route between eastern and western Bhutan, the Trongsa Penlop could, in fact, control the whole of central and eastern Bhutan from this point.

Next, visit Ta Dzong/Tongsa Museum, which was a watchtower that guarded Trongsa Dzong against internal rebellion, perched on a promontory above the town. In the late afternoon, proceed to Bumthang.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Private transport, an English-speaking guide, and an overnight accommodation at Yugarling Resort or a Similar Hotel in Bumthang.

Day 5Bumthang Sightseeing

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed with the Bumthang sightseeing. Start with visits to Tamshing and Kunchusom Monasteries, and then take a short 30-minute drive to Kurjey Lhakhang. This holy site is made up of three temples. The principal temple, built in 1652 by Minjur Tempa, the Trongsa Penlop, holds the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated and imprinted his body. The middle temple was built in 1900 by the First King of Bhutan during his time as the Trongsa Penlop.

The third temple, recently erected with the support of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck, is situated opposite Kurjey Lhakhang (an 8th-century monastery) on the other side of the river. It was originally founded by Terton Pema Lingpa. These monasteries are not only revered in Bhutan but are also famous in the Buddhist world as holy sites.

In the afternoon, visit Chamkhar Town and get a feel of the lifestyle of Bumthang.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Private transport, an English-speaking guide, and an overnight accommodation at Yugarling Resort or a Similar Hotel in Bumthang.

Day 6Bumthang to Gantay, Phobjikha Valley (Driving Distance: 137 km. Driving duration: 4-5 hrs. Altitude of Gantay: 2900m.)

After breakfast, proceed to Phobjikha Valley, which is the wintering ground for the black-necked cranes that migrate from Tibet. En route, visit Tongsa-Gantay Goenpa.

At Phobjikha, take a leisurely 1.5-hour walk on the Nature Trail, which is a beautiful and easy walk through the broad and marshy valley. The valley is the wintering ground for the black-necked cranes, which normally arrive in the first week of November and migrate back to Tibet in March. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Phobjikha Valley.

In addition, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Center to learn more about these beautiful birds and the efforts being made to protect them.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Private transport, an English-speaking guide, and an overnight accommodation at Dewachen Resort or a Similar Hotel in Phobjikha.

Day 7Gantay, Phobjikha Valley to Paro (Driving Distance: 165 km. Driving Duration: 4:30 hrs. Altitude of Thimphu: 2300m)

Paro Dzong is one of the most spectacular sights in Bhutan and a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. Its sloping walls create a massive structure that towers over the town. This fortress was constructed in the 17th century and was one of Bhutan’s most formidable and strategic fortresses, having repelled several invasions by Tibet into the Paro Valley. In the evening, you are free to explore Paro Town.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Private transport, an English-speaking guide, and an overnight accommodation at Khangkhu Resort or a Similar Hotel in Paro.

Travel Insurance

Nepal has a lot to offer with its incredible natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality. Travelling can also come with risks, which is why anyone visiting Nepal needs to consider purchasing travel insurance, particularly those involved in adventure activities or trekking, as well as those who will be travelling to remote areas of Nepal. A well-rounded insurance policy can provide peace of mind through protection against the following:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Trip cancellations/delays
  • Lost or damaged baggage
  • Altitude sickness from high elevations
  • Emergency rescue/evacuation by helicopter

Many trekking routes in Nepal are over 3000 meters (9842 ft); therefore, your policy should specifically state that high altitude travel is part of your Insurance plan, as well as the option to be evacuated in the event of an emergency. Choosing the right policy will help you receive the best possible care in your time of need.

If you don’t want to travel with your own equipment, there are plenty of places in Nepal where you can rent or purchase what you need (particularly in Thamel, Kathmandu’s main shopping district). There are also locations within the city where you can find stores that offer a variety of high-quality trekking apparel and equipment at very reasonable prices.
